The merge chain without the physics

If you have been dropping cats into a jar, 2048 is the same idea with the randomness taken out. Equal values combine into their double, exactly as two identical cats become one bigger cat — but here nothing rolls, nothing settles and nothing lands somewhere you did not intend.

Four by four grid, arrow keys or swipes. Every input slides the entire board, and two matching tiles that collide merge. A new 2 appears after each move.

Why it is harder than it looks

Because you cannot move one tile. In Cats Drop you choose where a single piece goes; in 2048 every decision rearranges everything you own. A move that makes one good merge often breaks three future ones.

This is why the game rewards thinking a move ahead in a way the physics merge games do not.

The corner strategy

• Pick a corner and never let your largest tile leave it. Bottom-left is the usual choice.
• Use three directions only. Treat the fourth — the one that lifts your big tile out of the corner — as unavailable.
• Build the bottom row in descending order from the anchor, so merges cascade along it.
• Press up only when there is genuinely no other legal move.

The loss condition, properly stated

Not running out of space — running out of pairs. A board full of distinct mid-sized tiles has nothing that can combine, and no empty cell for the next spawn.

So merge early even when the merge is small. Two 4s becoming an 8 hands you back an empty cell, and the empty cell is the thing you are actually short of.
