2048 with gravity

Numbered blocks fall into a set of columns and you choose which column each one lands in. Two equal numbers stacked on top of each other merge into their double, and the merge can cascade upward through the column.

It plays like a cross between 2048 and Tetris: the numbers come from one, the column management from the other.

Build a staircase

• Keep one column for your largest number and never drop anything smaller on top of it.
• Arrange the remaining columns in descending order so a merge in one column produces a number that can immediately merge into its neighbour.
• Leave a column empty as a dumping ground for numbers that fit nowhere. Filling your last free column is how a board dies.

Chaining

The scoring and the space both come from chains. A block that merges, then merges again with what is beneath it, then again, clears most of a column in one drop. Setting one up is worth two or three drops of patience.

Look down the column before you commit: if the top two values are 8 and 8 and beneath them is a 16, dropping an 8 clears three levels at once.
